Breakfast of Chumpions
So this morning I ventured out in search of breakfast. It was cold and a few people were setting up shops and stuff. Everything seems to open a little later in the morning, it was nearly 9am and most stores were closed.
As I headed down toward Shinsekai, I noticed about 30 ppl all crowding around a store that was still closed. The sign read テレビゲーム(terebi geemu), which means video game. I thought it must have been some sort of video game store with a sale or something, but when I came past later… nope, it was just a Pachinko place, and everyone was just waiting to play. I don’t understand the lure of the game, but it is strong! I suppose pokies are pretty popular in Australia too, they’re just confined to pubs. Japan doesn’t really seem to confine drinking and such to specific locations as strongly, since you can buy drinks anywhere, and as far as I know you can drink them anywhere. I see a few people walking around having a beer here and there. It’s rather unusual that it is illegal in Australia. I guess that’s the cost of having a free country or something, right?
I grabbed some food from a 7/11 like place. Some rice and sushi and an Onigiri. Most of the food seems a bit cheaper than Australia, and alcohol seems heaps cheaper. A 300ml whiskey bottle was 300円, about 3AUD. I think something similar goes for about 12AUD. 500ml Beer Cans are about 200円 from any vending machine or convenience store.
So today I will go and set up a bank account, hopefully that won’t be too difficult!
